Times tables
National Curriculum: expected secure by the end of Year 4.
What it is
A times table fact is secure when it is recalled, not rebuilt: 7 × 8 = 56 straight away, rather than counting up in eights. Each fact carries its whole family — 8 × 7, 56 ÷ 7 and 56 ÷ 8 — and it is the division forms that later written methods such as short division depend on.
Recall matters because it frees attention. A child who has to skip-count for every fact spends their working memory on the fact, and has none left for the problem the fact sits inside.
When children learn it
The 2, 5 and 10 times tables come in Year 2, then 3, 4 and 8 in Year 3, and all tables to 12 × 12 by the end of Year 4. In June of Year 4, state schools in England run the Multiplication Tables Check, a timed on-screen test of recall.
What it looks like when it goes wrong
These patterns come up again and again in children's answers on this skill. Each one points at a specific missing idea, not carelessness.
- Adding instead of multiplying. 7 × 8 answered as 15. The × sign has not yet attached to the idea of equal groups, so it is read as another way of writing plus.
- One group out. 7 × 8 answered as 48 or 64 — the answer to 6 × 8 or 8 × 8. The skip count lost or gained a whole group on the way, which is what counting up instead of recalling tends to do.
- Division answered with the product. Asked 56 ÷ 8, they answer 56, or reach for a multiplication instead. The division facts have not been connected to the multiplication facts they come from, so half the family is missing.
- Right answer, slow route. The 6, 7 and 8 tables come out correct but slowly, counted up from an anchor such as 5 × 8. Accurate, but under time pressure — including the Year 4 check — the count breaks down.
How to help at home
- Practise one new table mixed in with tables already known. A single table asked in order can be answered by counting; mixing forces recall.
- Ask the division forms too: when 7 × 8 comes back quickly, follow with 56 ÷ 7.
- A few minutes most days — in the car, over breakfast — beats a long weekly session, because recall is built by many quick retrievals.
- When one fact keeps failing, anchor it to a known one: 7 × 8 is double 7 × 4. Deriving is the bridge; recall comes from meeting the fact often.
